The sun is beating relentlessly on your cab as you speed through the outback with a load of ore. Things are getting hotter and hotter and finally you realise that the air coming out of the registers is warmer than the air in the cab. The air conditioning is cranked up to maximum, but nothing is happening. You pull over and call Lyons Air and book an appointment.

What’s a Compressor, Anyway?
In an air conditioning system, a refrigerant is circulated around a system consisting of an evaporator, a compressor and a condenser. The refrigerant is a fluid with properties that allow it to be converted from a high energy gas to a low energy liquid by a powered compressor and a condenser. The compressor is the engine of the system. It super-heats the gaseous refrigerant which is then able to condense into a liquid when it’s exposed to the cooler (but still warm) exterior air in the condenser.
Since liquids exist at a lower energy state than gases, the compressor and condenser effectively allow energy to be removed from the refrigerant. The refrigerant is then able to absorb heat energy from the air later in the cycle, in the evaporator. The cool air from the evaporator is what you feel blowing out of the registers in your truck. If the compressor doesn’t work, the air doesn’t get cooled.
